Cooling and mode problems
A fridge that will not cool because of Cooling Off, Power Outage or Showroom Mode settings, plus failed fans, thermostats, sensors and dirty condensers.

KitchenAid or Maytag fridge warm, Cooling Off on the display, or the ice maker not working? We repair KitchenAid and Maytag refrigerators, including built-in and French door models, across Fort Myers. We check the settings and modes their makers list, test the parts, and quote before any work begins.
KitchenAid and Maytag are sister brands under Whirlpool Corporation, and they share a lot of design and many parts. Their faults and fixes are closely related.
A fridge that will not cool because of Cooling Off, Power Outage or Showroom Mode settings, plus failed fans, thermostats, sensors and dirty condensers.
No ice, small cubes, slow dispensers, water filter and water-supply problems, and failed inlet valves on French door and side-by-side models.
Frost on the freezer wall, defrost heaters and sensors, frozen drains and water in the crisper drawers.
KitchenAid built-in and panel-ready refrigerators, with specific parts and fitting. We check the model before the visit.
KitchenAid and Maytag refrigerators are built to a similar standard, and both brands publish practical troubleshooting guides. A lot of the advice overlaps: set the fridge to about 37°F and the freezer to 0°F, check that cooling has not been switched off, keep the coils clean, and change the water filter about every six months. KitchenAid is also common in built-in and panel-ready installations, which cost far more to replace than a freestanding fridge.
That makes repair decisions different. On a built-in, an expensive repair can still be the better value, while on an older freestanding Maytag a big repair may not be. We diagnose first, then give you the repair price and an honest view of the age and type of the fridge. And we check the modes before we check the parts, since a fridge in Showroom Mode needs no repair at all.
Maytag says the water valve needs at least 20 psi to work properly. Our refrigerator repair FAQs cover more general checks, and our Whirlpool page covers the shared platform.

These points come from Maytag and KitchenAid product help pages, and are the benchmarks we check against on these fridges.
Maytag recommends 37°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer.
Set the freezer between 0°F and 5°F for the best ice production.
Replace the water filter every 6 months, when the indicator light comes on, or as needed.
The water valve needs at least 20 psi to work properly.
In greasy, dusty or pet homes, clean the condenser every 2 to 3 months. Otherwise, routine cleaning is not usually necessary.
When cooling is off, COOLING OFF appears on the display and the fridge will not cool until it is turned back on.
Many of these refrigerators do not show numeric error codes to the owner. These are the messages and modes we are asked about, with what the makers’ help pages say, and what we would try.
| Code | What KitchenAid and Maytag says it means | What to try | When to call |
|---|---|---|---|
| COOLING OFF | Cooling is turned off, so the fridge and freezer will not cool | Follow the manual to turn cooling back on | If it will not turn back on |
| Showroom Mode | A store display setting that can stop cooling | Follow the manual to exit the mode | If it keeps returning |
| Power Outage setting | A setting that may restrict cooling after an outage | Check the control panel instructions in the manual | If cooling does not return |
| Water filter indicator light | The filter is due for replacement | Replace the filter and reset the light as the manual says | If water or ice stays slow |
| Temperature warm alert (if shown) | The fridge or freezer is above its set range | Check the vents, the door and the loading | If it stays warm for hours |
| No display, no cooling | No power, or a failed control or board | Check the plug, the breaker and the outlet | If power is fine |
Code meanings are summarized from KitchenAid and Maytag’s official support page: Maytag refrigerator troubleshooting. Codes and fixes can differ by model, so check your manual too.
Match what you see to the usual cause, and to what is safe to try before you call.
| What you see | Usual cause | Safe first check | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display says COOLING OFF | Cooling turned off, Showroom Mode or a Power Outage setting | Follow the manual to turn cooling on | None, if it turns back on |
| Fridge warm, freezer cold | Evaporator fan, damper or frost on the coil | Look for frost; listen for the fan | Fan or defrost repair |
| Running constantly, weak cooling | Dusty coils, blocked vents or a leaking seal | Clean the coils; dollar-bill test the door | Coil clean or seal replacement |
| No ice or slow ice | Warm freezer, old filter, supply or a failed valve | Freezer 0°F to 5°F; replace an old filter | Valve or ice maker repair |
| Slow dispenser | Clogged filter, kinked line or low pressure | Replace the filter; check the line | Valve or line repair |
| Frost on the freezer back wall | Defrost heater, sensor or timer failure | Check the door seal | Replace the failed defrost part |
| Water in the crisper drawers | Clogged or frozen defrost drain | Look for ice at the freezer floor | Clear the drain; fix why it froze |
| Built-in is warm and noisy | Blocked ventilation, a failed fan or a cooling fault | Check clearances and the grille | Fan or cooling repair |
On the call we ask the brand, the model number, what the display says and what the fridge is doing.
We check Cooling Off, Showroom Mode and the settings, then test fans, defrost parts, sensors and the cooling circuit.
For ice and dispenser faults, we check the filter, the supply line, the pressure and the valve before the ice maker.
You hear the cause, the part and the price. On a built-in, we weigh the higher replacement cost honestly.
We fit the part and confirm cooling. We explain how long the fridge takes to settle.
You find these brands in Fort Myers kitchens from family homes to high-end remodels. These are the local factors we think about on every call.
KitchenAid built-ins are common in remodels in places like Cape Coral and Estero. They need ventilation, and they cost far more to replace than a freestanding fridge.
Maytag says to clean the condenser every 2 to 3 months in a dusty home or with pets. Many Fort Myers homes qualify.
A fridge that has been off for months may have Cooling Off or a setting that stops cooling. Check the display before you call.
A Power Outage setting and surge damage can both leave a fridge warm after a storm. We check the setting first, then the relay and board.
$100 - $450 depending on scope
Maytag repairs mostly land in the lower half of the range, with built-in KitchenAid models nearer the top because their parts and fitting are more specific. Boards, ice maker assemblies and compressors cost more. You get a clear quote before any work begins.
A relay, fan or gasket is modest. A defrost assembly, board or compressor costs more.
A built-in costs far more to replace, so an expensive repair can still be better value.
Parts depend on the exact model. Give us the model number and we check before the visit.
A fridge in Cooling Off or Showroom Mode needs no repair. We tell you honestly if that is all it is.
Maytag and KitchenAid freestanding fridges age like any other, so we weigh the repair against a new fridge. Built-ins are different, and a bigger repair can still make sense.
When comparing companies, ask whether the diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair, and whether parts and labor are in the quote.
| Job | Typical range | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Fan motor, relay or thermostat | $95 to $300 | Part, model and access |
| Ice maker assembly | $120 to $500 | Basic or in-door unit |
| Control board or compressor | $500 to $1,000+ | Model, age and type |

Check the display first. Maytag says a Cooling On/Off setting, a Power Outage setting or Showroom Mode may have been turned on by accident, and when cooling is off, COOLING OFF appears and the fridge will not cool. If not, check the vents, the door and the condenser. Then a fan, a defrost fault, a thermostat or a start relay needs testing.
It is a store display setting that can stop the cooling, so the lights work but the fridge never gets cold. Maytag lists it with the Cooling On/Off and Power Outage settings that can restrict cooling. Follow your manual to exit the mode. If it keeps returning, a control fault is possible.
Maytag recommends 37°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer. Allow 24 hours after any change. Use a freestanding thermometer, because the dial or display may not show the real temperature. If the fridge will not hold 40°F or below, call us.
Maytag says routine cleaning is not usually necessary, but in a greasy or dusty home, or with pets, clean the condenser every 2 to 3 months. Unplug the fridge, remove the base grille, and use a vacuum with a soft brush. Dusty coils make the fridge run longer.
Maytag lists the common causes: a restricted water supply, the freezer temperature (0°F to 5°F is best), the water filter and the ice maker being switched off. Maytag also says the water valve needs at least 20 psi. If those are fine, the valve, fill tube or ice maker may have failed.
Maytag recommends every 6 months, when the indicator light comes on, or as needed. A clogged filter cuts the water to the ice maker and dispenser. After a new filter, flush a few gallons through. If the flow is still slow, check the line and the valve.
A clogged filter is the most common cause. Then check for a kinked line behind the fridge, a half-closed valve and low water pressure. If a new filter does not help, the inlet valve may be failing. On French door models, a frozen line is also possible.
Heavy frost usually means moisture is getting in or the defrost system has failed. Check the door seal with the dollar-bill test, keep the vents clear, and look at the freezer back wall. A failed defrost heater, sensor or timer needs replacing, and defrosting only buys a few weeks.
For a Maytag or KitchenAid under about 10 years old, a fan, relay, thermostat, valve or gasket is usually worth fixing. Past that, or when the quote tops half the price of a new unit, replacing wins, except on built-ins, where replacement costs so much more.

Yes. We repair KitchenAid and Maytag refrigerators, including built-in and French door models, across Fort Myers and nearby areas such as Cape Coral, Estero, Lehigh Acres and Bonita Springs. Give us the model number, what the display says and what the fridge is doing when you call.
Refrigerant is not consumed, so if it is low there is a leak, usually from a corroded evaporator or condenser, a damaged line or a joint. Topping it up without fixing the leak is a short-term fix at best, and refrigerant handling is regulated. A leak on a built-in KitchenAid can still be worth repairing, because replacing a built-in costs so much more. We find the leak and give you honest numbers.
Maytag says the water valve needs at least 20 psi. Check the shut-off valve is open, the line is not kinked and the filter, which Maytag says to replace every 6 months, is not clogged. Then check for a frozen fill tube and the freezer at 0°F to 5°F. If the ice maker still does not fill, the inlet valve may have failed.
