Cooling and temperature faults
Fridge warm, freezer too cold or too warm, Cooling Off mode, dirty condensers, failed fans and thermostats or sensors.

Whirlpool fridge not cooling, display saying Cooling Off, or the ice maker stopped? We repair Whirlpool top-freezer, side-by-side, French door and bottom-freezer refrigerators across Fort Myers. We check the settings Whirlpool lists first, then test the part, and quote before any work begins.
Whirlpool is one of the most common refrigerator brands in Southwest Florida, and its faults are familiar ones: settings, filters, defrost and fans.
Fridge warm, freezer too cold or too warm, Cooling Off mode, dirty condensers, failed fans and thermostats or sensors.
No ice, small cubes, a dispenser that will not dispense ice or water, filter and water-supply problems, and failed inlet valves.
Frost on the freezer wall, defrost heaters, sensors and timers, and frozen drains that cause water in the drawers.
Door gaskets, noisy fans, start relays, capacitors and surge damage. We test the cheap parts first.
Whirlpool makes refrigerators in every common layout, and many of them share parts and platforms with Maytag, KitchenAid and other Whirlpool Corporation brands. Whirlpool’s own product help pages are practical and worth reading, and they cover the same ground we do: check the settings, the clearance, the coils and the filter, then look at the parts.
That is the right order. Many “not cooling” calls come down to Cooling Off being switched on, dust on the condenser or blocked vents. When it is not those, the usual faults are a failed evaporator fan, a defrost problem, a thermostat or sensor and a start relay. We find out which, and tell you honestly if the repair is worth it.
Whirlpool says its refrigerators are designed for indoor use only. Our refrigerator repair FAQs and coil cleaning guide add detail.

These points come from Whirlpool’s product help pages, and are the benchmarks we check against on a Whirlpool fridge.
Whirlpool says the fridge is for indoor use, with a room temperature between a minimum of 55°F and a maximum of 110°F.
Allow 24 hours for the freezer to reach temperature after installation, and at least 24 hours between temperature adjustments.
In dusty, greasy or pet-heavy homes, coils may need cleaning as often as every other month.
Whirlpool says to set the freezer between 0°F and 5°F for best ice production.
A clogged or badly installed filter can reduce the water flow to the ice maker and dispenser. Many Whirlpool-brand makers advise changing it about every 6 months.
Whirlpool-family troubleshooting says the water valve needs a pressure of at least 20 psi to work properly.
Many Whirlpool refrigerators do not show numeric error codes to the owner. These are the messages and lights we are asked about, with what Whirlpool’s help pages say, and what we would try.
| Code | What Whirlpool says it means | What to try | When to call |
|---|---|---|---|
| COOLING OFF | Cooling is turned off, so the fridge and freezer will not cool | Follow the manual to turn cooling back on; check for Showroom Mode | If it will not turn back on |
| Cooling Off indicator light | The same condition on models with a light instead of text | Check the control panel instructions in the manual | If the light stays on after a reset |
| Water filter status light | The filter needs replacing | Replace the filter and reset the indicator as the manual says | If water or ice stays slow |
| Door ajar alarm (on models that have one) | A door has been left open too long | Close both doors fully; check the seal | If it sounds with the doors shut |
| Temperature alarm (on models that have one) | The fridge or freezer is above the set range | Check the vents, the door and the loading | If it stays warm for hours |
| No light, no cooling | No power, or a failed control or board | Check the plug, the breaker and the outlet | If power is fine |
Code meanings are summarized from Whirlpool’s official support page: Whirlpool: refrigerator not cooling. Codes and fixes can differ by model, so check your manual too.
Match what you see to the usual cause, and to what is safe to try before you call.
| What you see | Usual cause | Safe first check | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display says COOLING OFF | Cooling turned off, or Showroom Mode | Follow the manual to turn cooling on | None, if it turns back on |
| Fridge warm, freezer cold | Evaporator fan, damper or frost on the coil | Look for frost; listen for the fan | Fan or defrost repair |
| Warm everywhere, running constantly | Dusty coils, blocked vents or a leaking seal | Clean the coils; dollar-bill test the door | Coil clean or seal replacement |
| No ice or slow ice | Warm freezer, clogged filter, water supply or a failed valve | Freezer 0°F to 5°F; replace an old filter | Valve or module repair |
| Dispenser will not dispense ice | Fused ice, a clogged chute or a failed dispenser part | Empty the bin and clear the chute | Dispenser repair |
| Frost on the freezer back wall | Defrost heater, sensor or timer failure | Check the door seal | Replace the failed defrost part |
| Water in the crisper drawers | Clogged or frozen defrost drain | Look for ice at the freezer floor | Clear the drain; fix why it froze |
| Clicking, then silence | Start relay, overload or capacitor | Listen for a click every few minutes | Replace the relay or capacitor |
On the call we ask the model number, what the display says and what the fridge is doing. A photo of the label helps.
We check Cooling Off, the settings and airflow, then test fans, defrost parts, sensors and the cooling circuit.
We look at the coils, the seals and the water supply as well as the part, so it does not fail again.
You hear the cause, the part and the price, and our honest view on repair versus replacement.
We fit the part and confirm cooling. We explain how long a fridge takes to settle.
Whirlpool fridges are everywhere in Fort Myers, from older homes to rentals. These are the local factors we think about on every Whirlpool call.
Whirlpool says the fridge is for rooms between 55°F and 110°F. A hot garage or lanai is outside that range, which matters for second fridges.
Whirlpool says coils may need cleaning as often as every other month in dusty or pet-heavy homes. Fort Myers homes with pets benefit most.
Many Whirlpool fridges are in rentals. We can give a short written diagnosis and quote for a landlord.
A surge can damage a relay or board. Unplug the fridge for 5 to 10 minutes after an outage, and call us if it will not hold temperature.
$100 - $450 depending on scope
Whirlpool parts are widely stocked, which keeps most repairs in the lower half of the range. Filters, gaskets, relays, thermostats and fans lead the list. Boards, ice maker assemblies and compressors cost more. You get a clear quote before any work begins.
A relay, fan or gasket is modest. A defrost assembly, board or compressor costs more.
Whirlpool parts are widely available, but they still depend on the model. Give us the model number.
A fridge in Cooling Off mode needs no repair. We tell you honestly if that is all it is.
If you rent, the landlord may need to approve the cost, so we can give a written quote.
Whirlpool fridges often run well past ten years, so age alone decides little. Under about 10 and the fix is a single part, repair. Older, and we compare the quote with a new fridge.
When comparing companies, ask whether the diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair, and whether parts and labor are in the quote.
| Job | Typical range | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Fan motor, relay or thermostat | $95 to $300 | Part, model and access |
| Ice maker assembly | $120 to $500 | Basic or in-door unit |
| Control board or compressor | $500 to $1,000+ | Model and age |

Check the display first. If it says COOLING OFF, Whirlpool says the fridge and freezer will not cool until cooling is turned back on. If not, check the vents, the door and the loading, then clean the condenser coils. If it still is not cold, a failed fan, a defrost fault, a thermostat or a start relay is likely, and we test them in order.
It means cooling has been turned off, so neither the fridge nor the freezer will cool. This can happen by accident, or if the fridge is in Showroom Mode. Follow your manual to turn cooling on. If you cannot, or it keeps turning off, a control fault is possible and we can check it.
Whirlpool says to allow 24 hours for the freezer to reach temperature after installation, and to wait at least 24 hours between temperature adjustments. Adding a lot of warm food can take several hours to stabilize. If it is still warm after a full day, call us.
Whirlpool says coils may need cleaning as often as every other month in greasy, dusty or pet-heavy homes, and less often in a clean one. Unplug the fridge, remove the base grille, and use a vacuum with a soft brush. Dusty coils make the fridge run longer and can stop it cooling properly.
Whirlpool says to set the freezer between 0°F and 5°F for the best ice production. If the freezer is warmer, ice is slow or stops. Check the real temperature with a thermometer, and check the door seal. If it cannot reach 5°F, the problem is on the cooling side.
Whirlpool lists the common causes as a restricted water supply, the freezer temperature, the ice maker being switched off, and the water filter. Check those first, and check the filter is seated and not clogged. If none of them is the cause, the fill tube, the valve or the ice maker module may have failed.
Cubes can fuse into a block, a chute can clog, or a dispenser part can fail. Empty the bin, break up any block and clear the chute. If the bin has loose ice and the dispenser still will not work, the dispenser mechanism needs a look. Whirlpool has a help page for French door models.
Many Whirlpool-brand makers suggest about every 6 months, or when the filter light comes on. A clogged or badly installed filter reduces the flow to the ice maker and dispenser. After a new filter, flush a few gallons through. If the flow is still slow, the line or valve needs checking.
The usual cause is a clogged or frozen defrost drain. Meltwater cannot leave, so it runs into the fridge and pools under the drawers. Check the seal and look for ice on the freezer floor. If it returns, the drain needs clearing and we need to find why it froze.
Often, yes. Whirlpool parts are easy to get, so a fan, relay, thermostat or gasket on a fridge under about 10 years old is usually money well spent. Once a repair passes half the price of a similar new fridge, you are better off replacing it. We lay out both numbers for you.
No. We are an independent refrigerator repair company, not affiliated with or endorsed by Whirlpool. We repair Whirlpool refrigerators using the manufacturer's published guidance as a reference, and we tell you honestly if a manufacturer warranty may be worth checking before you pay.
Yes. We repair Whirlpool refrigerators across Fort Myers and nearby areas, including Cape Coral, Estero, Lehigh Acres and Bonita Springs. Give us the model number, what the display says and what the fridge is doing when you call, and we plan the visit.
One click when the compressor starts or stops is normal. Clicking every few minutes with no cooling is usually the start relay or overload failing to start the compressor. A relay is cheap, so it is worth testing first. If the clicking comes with a warm fridge, call us, and do not keep power cycling it.
